A handkerchief is a good starter project with sewing, too since it\u2019s a straight stitch with minimal steps. You can use any kind of cotton fabric, but I\u2019ve found 100% cotton to have the best result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me sewing a handkerchief is like the programming \u201cHello world\u201d of sewing. Although they seem antiquated, I started using a handkerchief a while ago when I began trying to be more eco-conscious. I transferred to a new office building and saw how the waste bin there would always be overflowing with paper towels by the end of the day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other thing was always needing to wash my daughter\u2019s hands in public places and needing a towel to wash or dry them. It\u2019s paid dividends since I\u2019ve used it in convenience and peace of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Supplies:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cotton fabric (14\u201d x 14\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seem gauge (to measure the hems. Or you can just eyeball it)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Iron<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marking pen. You can use the following:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heat erasable pens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chalk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Air and water soluble marking pen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scissors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Needle and thread<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sewing machine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you start: always remember to wash and dry your fabric before sewing! If you\u2019d rather eyeball it than use a seem gauge that\u2019s okay too. It\u2019s your project. Remember that it doesn\u2019t have to look perfect. That\u2019s not the point of this exercise and it\u2019s not the lesson we want to teach from doing it. This is your project. The easy and straightforward way is to just hem and overlap the corners. If you want to get really GQ, then you can sew mitered corners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Folded Corners<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/newdadsewingschool.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/22-FlatCorners1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newdadsewingschool.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/22-FlatCorners1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/newdadsewingschool.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/22-FlatCorners1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newdadsewingschool.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/22-FlatCorners1-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a straight stitch sew down the hems with the stitch a little bit away from your hem fold. The stitch length you can do around 2-3. Don\u2019t pull the fabric. Let the feed dogs do the work, but try to guide the fabric with your hands. Double check your stitches while you\u2019re going to check your thread tension. When you get to the corner, leave the needle down, lift up the feet and pivot the fabric around the needle. This helps you to not lose the seem. Then when you\u2019ve pivoted, lower the feet back down and continue the stitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" hem fold back and it should line up into a neat corner.
