And you’ll find you need somewhere to toss these while you’re sewing. When I started sewing I just put these in a pile on my desk until I finished and threw these out in the trash can. But eventually my projects became bigger and the workspace couldn’t contend with the pile of scraps, so I made a cloth scrap basket to collect all of the extra threads and fabric scraps. It sounds corny, but it was a big leap in terms of productivity.

Or say you need something to store random stuff like batteries or tape. Or you need a basket to store your kid’s stuff like toys or wipes. I remember buying one of these at the container store a long time ago for like $10.

This project will go over how to sew a simple storage basket that you can use for any of these cases and save money by making your own. Sewing it is fairly straightforward and introduces adding lining to a bag as well as sewing rounded bottoms. This comes in useful when sewing other bags like duffel bags and bucket bags.

For the parts, you’ll need to find a round object to use as the stencil for the base. This can be like a small plate or a lid. I like the size of a bowl so I’m going to use that. The length of the side fabric will be based on the circumference of the lid. In this case the circumference of the base (a bowl) is about 19”. The height can be whatever you want, but I suggest about 7-8” so it’s got some depth but isn’t too tall.

Supplies:

1/4 yard of fabric for the outer layer

1/4 yard for the lining fabric (this will vary depending on the size of your base)

Scissors

Sewing machine

Universal thread

Measure tape

Pins or clips

A note about fabric:

For type of fabric you’ll want to go with something more sturdy like denim or duck canvas. For the liner go with something lighter like regular cotton or do canvas. If you want to be super frugal and do some eco-friendly up-cycling you can use an old pair of denim jeans.

A note about needles:

For this project you will need to use a needle designed for heavier weight fabrics like a jeans needle. This is to make sure the needle and thread tension doesn’t get bogged down and stuck. Otherwise your stitches will be messed up where you have some long and then tiny stitches. A jeans needle has a sharper point that goes through the fabric more easily. At the fabric store there is a section for needles and this type literally says “Jeans” on the front. As to which size, you can default to a 10/14 size. Needle sizes are outside the scope of this post.

What is duck canvas?

Per knowingfabric.com:

Duck canvas traces its origins back to its Dutch predecessor, known as ‘doek,’ which originally denoted a sturdy linen cloth favored for its durability and strength. The term ‘duck’ in canvas refers to the tightly woven, plain weave fabric that provides robustness and sturdiness. Initially used for sailcloth due to its resilience, duck canvas has transitioned from its maritime heritage to become a versatile material employed in various sectors like fashion, home decor, and industrial applications. While early versions were crafted from linen, modern duck canvas predominantly consists of cotton fibers, blending strength with flexibility for diverse projects.

To calculate the width of the side panel, first cut out the circle.
